you are invited to be anything you want to be- it is your heart’s desire
you can be scary, funny, glamorous, famous, or what you always wished you could have been in a time you wish you had lived.
the choice is yours.
it is so much fun. just do it. get dressed up and come out to play.
the fun part is dreaming and planning what you want to be. or simply look in your closet long enough and for sure can whip something up in no time. i’ve done that so many times.
i once wore every string bead necklace that i own, made my hair an afro, and called myself a hippie (i have always said: i should have lived in the 60s and 70s).
the other time my hair worked for me, i turned myself into diana ross.
then there was the time when i hung empty cereal boxes on myself with ketchup all over me for the gory effect and called myself a cereal killer.
there was also the time i dressed in an evening gown and just looked glamorous. i figured the drag queens on cedar springs or oak lawn avenue did it, why not me?
the best halloween is when i took my sweet time and made myself a flower. it changed my entire life……….
like i said, anything can happen……..

i’m a flower!
i did not know yet, but it was a special halloween. i had met my husband but had no idea that that i would even start dating him. this halloween, we met with friends like we often did and i had made my own costume and dressed me up as a flower. no particular kind but i had a head piece too big to even fit through the door of the bar where we gathered. i used white tissue paper and made the stamen out of green pipe cleaner wires and stuck bees and butterflys all over the top. i then wore green shorts and a white tank top (you, know texas weather in october) and painted vines and leaves all over my arms and legs.

my treasure and markus
becuase my head dress was so huge and everyone around me was smoking, i was afraid i was going to catch on fire. the only free or accident free space was at my husband’s table (who was dressed as albert einstein). i asked if i could sit with him and his friend and the rest is history.

dr. T, me, and coco who brought her bells and spells that night!
it really was a fun night. everyone was dressed up and in a festive mood. my favorite costume/s that year were kelli and scott (husband and wife) came dressed as a glade-plug-in and a socket. everyone had a great time. at one point we all left to go to the haunted house across the street and spontaneously stopped to pose for photos. we have so many of this night and i am grateful for it.

me and markus
there was really no flirting at all going on but he asked me out to dinner for the next weekend at the end of the night. i really don’t know why i said yes ( maybe becuase i had one too many cape cods by then) but i am so happy that i did. in that moment i really had no thought, any idea, or a clue, that he would become my life partner, let alone end up being the father of my children.

me, and tall, dark, and handsome. i swear, we were air kissing here (maybe there was flirting going on!)
so special, but also so funny. some moments when i think about this time, i feel i made myself a flower for him to pick. i think about the hours i spent meticulously putting the petals together, opening them up to blume, and placing my bees and butterflys on with the utmost care to detail. and all the while the universe was moving me to meet my true soul mate.
i have always loved halloween but it goes without saying that this unforgettable one is the one i cherish the most.

October 24th, 2007 at 11:27 pmElsa,
I just love you! You are my kinda gal.
Thank you for promoting the Halloween Fete, and for being you. The kind of “dress up” gal you are.
I once brought all the gay guys down in Oak Lawn. Man it was it fun!!
It was a last minute costume, like yours that happened to “work”. I went as a “cowgirl” I made a gigantic cow head with cardboard and white and black fake fur, a Cow fur print mini skirt and cowgirl boots. The gay guys thought I was gay. Man it was fun and memorial!
